CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Jessie Bennett crafted a fine Regency romance which includes mystery. The first book in a new series, The Bainbridge Love and Challenges Series, I found this story an enjoyable and entertaining read. Giving Anne Marie a firm belief in love and marriage, she was unwilling to settle for anything less. She sees beyond social status; she wants a strong good man who loves her, rather than a cold title. A strong determined heroine, she also treated her companion as a friend rather than a servant. Servants during this time period, considered inferior lower class, were ignored by the nobility; they saw them as undeserving of respect and care. Adding in the rivalry for James between Ann Marie and Clara, added an extra element to this tale, as well as, the many candidates available in this small village.
