The Trouble With These Gentlemen By Jessie Bennett

The BainBridge – Love & Challenges

The Trouble With These Gentlemen
The Trouble With These Gentlemen

STORY-LINE THE TROUBLE WITH THESE GENTLEMEN BY JESSIE BENNETT:

Set in 1818, Regency England, The Trouble With These Gentlemen by Jessie Bennett’s a wonderful tale.  Viscountess Anne Marie Wiltshire must marry before her 21st birthday to inherit her fortune.  Finding no one suitable in London, she and her companion Clara, traveled searching for a man she could find her happy ever after.  Unwilling to marry for title alone, Ann Marie finds herself in Bainbridge Village.  Staying at the Fordham Hotel , Ann Marie meets James Ellingham, son of the proprietors of the hotel.  James, without title or wealth, immediately catches her eye; the feeling is mutual.

But will she throw away a fortune for love?  What a decision she must make!  Security with a wealthy titled gentleman or life with a poor country gentleman.  My Regency romance book reviews of the Trouble With These Gentlemen follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Jessie Bennett crafted a fine Regency romance which includes mystery.  The first book in a new series, The Bainbridge Love and Challenges Series, I found this story an enjoyable and entertaining read.  Giving Anne Marie a firm belief in love and marriage, she was unwilling to settle for anything less.  She sees beyond social status; she wants a strong good man who loves her, rather than a cold title. A strong determined heroine, she also treated her companion as a friend rather than a servant.  Servants during this time period, considered inferior lower class, were ignored by the nobility;  they saw them as undeserving of respect and care.  Adding in the rivalry for James between Ann Marie and Clara, added an extra element to this tale, as well as, the many candidates available in this small village.

A Viscount’s Second Chance By Joyce Alec

A Viscount’s Second Chance

STORY-LINE A VISCOUNT’S SECOND CHANCE BY JOYCE ALEC:

Lady Eleanor Dawson, now Lady Brooke, is a widow ready to go to town.  A short arranged marriage to a man she did not love, left her sure she would not marry again.  However, the thought of the dancing, parties, and seeing old friends is very desirable.   Henry Armitage watched Eleanor from afar for months.  Shy and hesitant, he’d lost his chance to meet Eleanor when her father arranged her marriage.  Now, she’s back in town, and Henry has another opportunity to win her hand.  Or does he?  For evil stalks the wealthy Eleanor.  Meanwhile, old scandals follow Henry, and new scandals threaten Eleanor.  My Regency romance book reviews of A Viscount’s Second Chance follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Although a short Regency novella, Joyce Alec filled this book with suspense, threats, and romanceAlec could not develop the storyline or characters to the extent of a novel.  However, she created a short, intense read which will hold your attention.  Henry’s cast as the knight in shining armor and Eleanor as the lady in distress.  Watching Henry development as he came out of his shell is terrific.  Alec created a dastardly villain for her tale who is mean, cruel, greedy, and determined to get his way.  I found him the perfect foil for Henry.

The scenes in A Viscount’s Second Chance transitioned smoothly, and Alec‘s writing flowed well.  Her characters were full-bodied and realistic to this period.  Joyce Alec provided secondary characters which added depth to the storyline. A Viscount’s Second Chance is a clean Regency romance which included suspense and mystery providing the reader with an entertaining read.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Author Isabella Thorne created a tale of curses, an evil book, romance, and family dynamics.  I found Ruby a strong character with moral fiber.  Determined to carry out the Earl’s wishes, she’s willing to lose what she wants most.  The family dynamics included in this tale show jealousy, greed, and the willingness to do anything to process this evil book.

Joyce Alec created a charming story of abandonment and planned revenge, filling it with vivid descriptions, heartache, romance.  I loved watching Alice grow from insecure and sad to a woman of worth and strength.  Joyce Alec created an intriguing tale of a woman bent on revenge and retribution and a man who is not what he seems.

William’s character shows the world a face of gaiety and fun; almost as if he had never faced the situation he found his life.  Alec created a façade of a man carefree and fancy-free;  attending balls, dancing the night away, and flirting with the women of the Ton.  Is there more to William than meets the eye?  Alice’s plan seems to have the opposite effect she intended as she and William throw words and dance around each other.

STORY-LINE THE GOVERNESS WHO STOLE MY HEART BY HANNA HAMILTON:

Left at altar by, Simon the Duke of Lennox brother, Susan Wilton continues teaching school in her village;  hiding her anger, shame, and grief deep inside.  She’s not afraid of being a spinster. Her mom wonders if she will ever marry.  Daniel, a childhood friend home from the navy, begins to court Susan.  Then Susan receives a wonderful offer to teach the Duke’s daughter and care for the motherless child.  A sad lonely little girl, who’s ignored by her father, Susan can not say no.

As the Duke and Susan work together, they become closer and closer.  Daniel increases his suite.  With two men vying for her hand, things take a turn, who will she choose?  My historical romance book reviews follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

Author Hanna Hamilton created a historical novel filled with twists and turns and the dynamics of relationships.  Hamilton skillfully wove romance in this story-line.  Susan sees problems with a sea Captain whose home little, always at a different port.  Hamilton showed her worry and hesitation in forming such a marriage.  Daniel’s character’s a gentleman, with manners, and morals.  John, the Duke of Lennox, is a sad man who has grieved the loss of his wife in child-birth for years;  blaming the child.  I felt so sorry for both, John and his daughter, Elizabeth.  John, for all he’s missing in his misplaced blame and Elizabeth in the loss of a close relationship with her father.  Hanna Hamilton added in family dynamics in John’s relationship with his brother, Simon.  Also, he’s far different from others of the ton;  he works hard on the estate and cares little for social position.  I loved watching him open up and let go of his grief.

Susan’s a strong woman, who refuses to make decisions on the spur of the moment.  She’s torn between two good men;  each with much to offer and each having draw backs.  She was reluctant to give either man an answer.  A teacher and nurturer at heart, she takes Elizabeth into her heart.   It’s wonderful to watch Elizabeth bloom under Susan’s tutelage and care.  Susan’s character’s not a saint; she has issues just as all of us do.  Issues she must face and resolve.

In Love One Summer In Bath containing story, Hope For Charity, the reader’s treated to a short regency romance story set in Bath.  Lady Charity Abernathy’s looking for a husband.  However, Charity wants to marry for love and not social position.  Naive and young, she believes all the gossip she hears. Lord Wentwell, object of the latest gossip, reputation is one of a rake and rogue.  Upon meeting, Lord Wentwell, Neville Collington, Charity gives him the cold shoulder.  However fate has a different course in store for Charity.  Lord Wentwell’s reputation is not what it seems.  Come along with Charity as she discovers all gossip’s not true and love could be waiting in the wings.  My romance book review of Hope For Charity follows.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

I found Hope For Charity a sweet clean romance.  Although Charity’s character is a naïve young woman, she knows she wants to marry for loveSocial position mean little to her.  She has a caring heart which differs from most of the ton.  Neville’s allowed his reputation to flourish which will cause him a great deal of problems with Charity.  Furthermore, including the Neville’s brother, added an extra ingredient to the story;  as a result, allowing Charity to see a side of Neville the gossips did not.  We know today, the brother was a victim of PTSD.  Charity comes to see the true Neville rather than his soiled reputation.

EXCERPT: LORD OF PLEASURE

“Lady X, I presume?” His heart was still pounding and his breath a bit too quick, but he’d made it. He was the first at her side.
“Lord X.” Her red lips smiled up at him from beneath her impenetrable black mask. “It’s a pleasure to see you again.”
“The pleasure is most definitely mine.” He proffered his arm. “Come with me.”
“Should I?” she rejoined archly.
“I shall beg if I must.”
Only when her fingers curved about his elbow did his tense muscles finally relax.
He guided her up the slender staircase lining the far wall. When they reached the upper promenade, he led her not to the balcony overlooking the back garden, but to a hidden corridor with a second, smaller staircase, twisting up a dark tower.
She tilted her head. “What’s up there?”
“Come and find out.” He stepped into the darkness, held out his hand, and waited.
She placed her white-gloved fingers in his.
“I’ve been thinking of you all week,” he said roughly. “It’s been maddening.”
“Why didn’t you stop?”
“I can’t.” He pulled her into his arms and slanted his mouth over hers.
The last time he’d kissed her, he’d felt she was holding back on her passion. He didn’t want her to. Not with him. Not tonight. He cradled the side of her face in his hand and told her with every kiss that there was no need for circumspection. No need to be tentative.
Whoever she was before she stepped through the vestibule door, here she was a goddess cloaked in darkness and sheltered by the night. They were as anonymous as stars in the sky, their passion as bright. Her power was boundless. With naught more than the taste of her kiss, she was capable of bringing him to his knees.
Heart pounding, he pulled away while he still could.

LORD OF CHANCE, BOOK 1 IN THE ROGUES TO RICHES SERIES

The fledgling hope building in Charlotte’s breast was more than ill-advised. The last thing she needed was Mr. Fairfax becoming involved. Not when she had no idea what their future held.
But what if they were able to resolve their legal predicament and then discovered they suited quite well? Wouldn’t it be lovely have a kind, handsome husband?
She pushed the tantalizing idea away. For now, they must stick to being friends.
“Help me to my feet, Mr. Fairfax,” she said instead.
“Oh, dear,” he gasped in mock horror. “Are we to be a stuffy married couple?”
She looked down her nose at him primly. “A lady would never use her husband’s given name without permission.”
“Then, by God, you must call me Anthony immediately. And I shall call you…”
She gazed back at him placidly.
“…Mary?” he guessed.
She pressed her lips together and shook her head.
“Sarah? Jane? Griselda Louise?”

How Do Like Romance Wrapped In Mystery

Romance, Mystery, All Wrapped In One Love Story

Jane Ashford, as author of this book, has created another wonderful Regency Romance.  She is a seasoned writer with many books to her credit.

Margaret Mayfield is a typical gentle young woman of her day; repressed, timid, naive, totally controlled by her overbearing mother and father, totally unaware of what was happening outside her narrow world of parties, teas, and socials.  Her life is ruled by the standards of the day.

Sir Justin Keigley is the opposite of Margaret. He promotes progressive legislature and improvements for

Jack The Ripper

Victorian London’s East Side

Evil, Mystery, Adventure, and Love

Author Jennifer Wilde has created this story in London’s east side which in the reign of Queen Victoria was a hell hole, during the day it was relatively safe.  At night evil reigned supreme, from young bucks looking for fun to the new evil of the murderer called the Ripper.

The Ripper kills silently, efficiently and very brutally.  Ms. Wilde’s descriptions of the east side were so vivid I could see each street and the activities taking place; I could see the trash and offal, I could almost smell the odors.

The heroine of the story is Susannah; she lives in the east side with her Aunt Marietta until her Aunt is violently killed.  Susannah moves in with Margaret, a distant cousin of Marietta’s; our hero Nicholas Craig, who is wealthy, sullen, cold, distant, and has a strange occupation of creating statistics lives temporarily with his Aunt Margaret until he completes his book of statistics.

Aunt Margaret also has a strange boarder, Mr. Lord, in her attic.  The stage is set for this murder mystery.  The Ripper is running a muck in London’s East Side and Susannah is trying to solve the mystery of her guardian, Ms. Margaret’s house on Nine Buck Row, and fighting her attraction to Nicholas; attraction which runs both ways.

Beauty and the Rake (The Rookery Rogues #3)by Erica Monroe

beauty and the rake

This is the third book of the Rookery Rogues, but can be read as a stand alone.

Beauty and The Rake is the first of this series I have read.  Author Erica Monroe has created a wonderful take on the old fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast.  This is a different type of Victorian novel as it does not involve nobles nor people of quality.  I found this very refreshing.

Abigail and Inspector Michael Strickland are definitely not from the noble class. Abigail Vautille lives in impoverishment in the poorest area of Whitechapel. Life is an exhausting business in the

This story begins in London and Devon in 1845. Gwen is employed by Lord Beecham in the London law Silk and Scars by Cassandra Deanfirm that handles legal matter for the Edward, Duke of Sowrith. She mistakenly mixes a personal letter in with correspondence to Edward.

Gwen reveals her fear for the health and well- being of her parents and how she longs for home.

Author Cassandra Deans descriptions were so vivid I could easily see the scene described; whether it was the tors and moors described by Edward or setting the scene of reading Gwen’s and Edward’s letters.

Edward demands Lord Beecham and his scribe Gwen come to Devon immediately, after Gwen wrote of an incident occurring at the firm. Edward and Gwen would finally

David’s idea of caring for his grandmother is writing to her not providing his companionship.
David is rather dense when it comes to women and their emotions or how to deal with either. Author Shirley Marks portrayed him as rather out of touch, in his words, he never seemed to do the right thing. Is David correct, are his grandmothers servants ease-dropping on their every word? Did everyone really believe his hoax family really existed?

Mrs. Penny Parker takes on the task of moving David from standing back and watching life, to becoming involved in the everyday world of family life. As with many gentlemen of his time period, they did not take
