DIY Bleach Trial

Hi Everyone:

I am experimenting with the DIY Bleach recipe I posted on September 16, 2016.  I have added equal parts lemon juice and water; using the bottled type purchased in a two pack from the warehouse club store everyone loves.  As I am not sure if this will affect the finished product, I will post an update.

Other than adding lemon juice, I left the recipe the same.  I have stored correctly and will update you on the effect on my laundry.  As I understand it, the lemon juice helps whiten clothes, as does the citric acid.  I am hoping the addition will help with my hubby’s nasty undershirts.  I am a little worried the increase might be harsh on the material.  Well, we will see.

ORIGINAL RECIPE:

  • 3 cups 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 3 cups water
  • 3 Tbls citric acid
  • Mix all together, place in a DARK BOTTLE ( MUST BE DARK), as hydrogen peroxide loses its strength when exposed to light. Use as you would bleach. Just as you would with manufactured Clorox, Do Not mix anything with the product( such as ammonia),  I don’t know what chemical reaction it would produce.

I used a white milk jug from the warehouse club, wrapped it in a dark towel, then sat inside my cabinet.  You can get fancy covering with construction paper or sit jug inside brown paper bag securing with a rubber band at the top; then use your artistic nature to make it beautiful.  I do not care about a pretty bottle as you can see from the photos below.  Also, if you save your brown bottles when all the hydrogen peroxides used, you can pour the recipe into them, mark the outside and store.

I have a small load of really nasty filthy kitchen hand towels and cloths.  I am going to soak them in the washer overnight with 1/2 cup of the new formula and detergent.  If the recipe does not clean them, I will increase to 1 cup in the next batch. I always  soak my filthy/very dirty clothes overnight in the washer.
