STORY-LINE FLIGHTLESS BIRD BY KELLIE MCALLEN:
In Flightless Bird, we find a young girl on the verge of womanhood. Raised by an abusive alcoholic mother, her father in prison, and an only child, Lexus Wren is lonely, extremely shy, very insecure, dirt poor, and the butt of jokes and demeaning comments in high school.
“She was like a flightless bird, her wings clipped by every cruel word and heartless action…”
Her life’s a nightmare until the day two hunky new students, twins Phoenix and Griffin Easton, transfer to her school. Lexus can not believe they find her attractive; the odd ball of the school. Lexus can only think: how’s this possible? She has never had a boyfriend, and suddenly she has two boys vying for her attention. She has nothing to recommend her as she’s white trash. However, Phoenix and Griffin see something in Lexus no one else sees.
Phoenix and Griffin have their own set of problems and issues, the least of which is Lexus. Both, Phoenix and Griffin, attracted to Lexus, find she has a decidedly unusual affect upon them. Electricity and sparks flow when Lexus touches either of them. Really, actual sparks. Drawn to Lexus and they feel protective as well. However, each young man’s an individual with different methods of dealing with problems and issues.
Come along with Phoenix, Griffin, and Lexus as they explore their situation and what could come from it. My reviews of young adult paranormal romance novel, Flightless Bird, follows.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Essentially a young adult paranormal novel, Flightless Bird, has sweet romance, caring, and sparks fly as we follow the characters. Filled with teenage angst and insecurities, McAllen skillfully portrays the problems involved in growing up and surviving the teenage years. Add in the fact Lexus is poor and raised by an alcoholic trashy mother, the effects Phoenix, Griffin, and Lexus have on each other, Lexus problems mount exponentially. I felt so sorry for her I wanted to cry.
McAllen developed each character with skill. As the reader comes to know identical twins Phoenix and Griffin, we realize they are two very different people with individual characteristics and problem solving abilities. Furthermore, McAllen included mystery into the story-line; she does not resolve the mystery until the last possible moment. Perhaps resolve is not the correct word, as this story will continue into the next book.
Finally in concluding my reviews of paranormal romance novel, Flightless Bird, I found the pacing fast yet smooth and steady. McAllen’s writing is clear and the story-line is clean without the use of sex or fluff to fill the pages. I look forward to following Phoenix, Griffin, and Lexus in future books. I would not hesitate to buy this book for my self or a friend.
FLIGHTLESS BIRD RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4
