CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
Firstly, let me say, how much I enjoyed this novel. I read Governess For the Brooding Duke straight through, I was so anxious to find how it would all end. Barton’s skill in describing scenery, seasons, and clothing’s excellent. I could see the countryside, the leaf colors, and the clothing worn by the characters. As a result, the vivid descriptions held my attention and interest. Also, I found the premise of the story-line refreshing and original. I found myself crying, sighing, and cheering for Georgette as I read this book. Barton included several chapters near the end, which will make the reader emotional. Also, the epilogue was wonderful, giving insight in their life.
The character development was progressive throughout the novel. I found Georgette matured and became a strong determined woman rather than an idle young lady. Finding, she loves her charges gives her the courage to remedy their horrible situation and find peace for the Duke, and just maybe romance. The Duke matures from a man presenting a facade of unfeeling, cold, straight-laced, and stand offish behavior, becoming a likeable hero by the end of the book. The secondary characters, so necessary to the plot, added depth and intrigue to the story-line.
In concluding my reviews for romance novel, A Governess For The Brooding Duke, I found the pacing spot on for the length of the book. The scenes transitioned seamlessly from one scene to another. Barton created a clean and wholesome regency romance without including fluff or sex to add to the page count; a lovely sweet romance. I found this book thoroughly entertaining. I would not hesitate to buy this novel for my self or friend.
