CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:

As everyone knows who reads my reviews, I love cozy mysteries.  Author Ruby Loren crafted another fine mystery in Penguins And Mortal Peril.  Madi’s an intelligent caring zookeeper who loves the animals under her care. Loren gave Madi strong work ethics.  Never one to watch the clock, she willing to work all hours and do whatever necessary for the animals.  She’s strong and determined, as well as, inventive.  She has a natural instinct for what the animals need to thrive and reproduce.  With the threat of terrorist, extreme animal rights activist, and murder, Madi searches for answers.  Something stinks at the zoo, and it’s not the animals.

Loren had many plot lines to bring together to close Penguins And Mortal Peril, which she did skillfully.  I loved the information she included on the different species.  Madi did not see them as disposable creatures worthy of minimal care.  She saw them as intelligent creatures with quarks and personalities.  Loren kept the who, what, when, and why close to her chest; revealing the answers when needed in the story-line.  All my guesses were wrong.  Loren grabbed me immediately and held my attention throughout the book.  Her scenes flowed smoothly and the pace’s in line with the length of the book. I found her characters well-developed with some you will love and others you will love to hate.

In concluding my cozy mystery review of Penguins and Mortal Peril, I found a solid cozy mystery filled with intrigue, mystery, and a touch of light romance.  Perfect for an afternoon of lazy reading in your favorite chair, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries.
