A Time Of Torment By John Connolly

A Time Of Torment

“There’s a kind of evil that isn’t even in opposition to good, because good is an irrelevance to it.  It’s a foulness that’s right at the heart of existence, born with the stuff of the universe.  It’s in the decay to which all things tend.  It is, and it always will be, but in dying we leave it behind.  And while we’re alive?  We set our souls against it, and our saints and angels, too. Especially the destroying ones”

STORY LINE:

Charlie Parker is back in action in this fast paced thriller.  Author John Connolly has once again created a novel of intrigue, suspense, and mystery with paranormal elements.

Charlie Parker fights evil; evil of the most insidious kind, evil that seeks to erode the soul and framework of man.  Charlie Parker is a man who died and came back.  He is different now; he has a fire in his soul as he seeks to destroy evil as he senses and see things others can not.  Charlie Parker and his friends Angel and Louis will fight the ultimate evil in this novel from the imagination of John Connolly.

Hog Killing Day On The Farm By Vera Mallard

STOP:  IF YOU ARE AN ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST, EMOTIONAL, OR TENDER-HEARTED, PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS POST.  THIS IS THE DESCRIPTION OF THE SLAUGHTERING OF HOGS FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION AS IT WAS DONE ON FAMILY FARMS ALL OVER THIS COUNTRY FOR MANY DECADES!

This article is written from my memories as a child.  I wish I could take a trip back to experience it all over again.  Before too long, no one will remember the way of life I will describe because those of us who lived it will be gone.  Few in the our country carry on the traditions of raising and slaughtering their food.  Believe it or not, those lovely packs of chickens, steaks, and pork chops, ready for you to buy and cook, started their life on a farm somewhere.

This is the story of one day of life on our farm.  We were poor country people; no different than anyone else in our small community.  We grew what we ate and shopped at a country store on credit for what we could not grow.  The thought of jumping in the car to grocery shop for our weekly groceries, never crossed our minds.  The Winn Dixie, A&P, Food Lion nor any other major chain existed in our small town; they were many years in the future.

market-893319_640

The pork and beef you buy in those beautiful packages at the grocery and meat market has to be slaughtered and packed at a processing plant.  We did not have this luxury when I was a girl.  We had to slaughter and process our own meat to feed the family.

DAYS BEFORE “HOG KILLING DAY”:

Dad had to gather everything he would need for Hog Killing Day and have it ready and waiting.  He placed all the wash-pots where they needed to be, tables setup, gun and shells ready, the scalding vat was ready for use, water hoses to wash out the gutted hogs, 50 lb bags of salt for pickle, lard stands, ham box ready, and he had wood for the fires. Mom gathered all the knives, pots and

Life On A Tobacco Farm By Vera Morton Mallard

This article is written from my memories as a child and teenager. I wish I could take a trip back to experience it all over again just for a day.  Before too long, no one will remember the way of life I will describe because those of us who lived it will be gone.  Rural farms are disappearing just as King Tobacco has disappeared.  Now, instead of growing tobacco, the land sets forlorn or is growing houses, condos, apartments, or mobile homes.

Life on a tobacco farm was hard back-breaking work.

I grew up in the South during a time when tobacco was King.  Everyone we knew grew, harvested, and cured tobacco in eastern rural North Carolina.

It was our cash crop and the only way of making a living for our families.  This was before we knew how harmful tobacco products were to our health.

We rose early on the farm when tobacco season was in full swing.  My father would rise around 4 in the

The Sweetest Rain by Myra Johnson is a clean novel of love and families with and without family values.

This novel is set in Eden Arkansas during a time period of great poverty and desperation.

Story Line:

In this story Sally Tidwell, a deaf young woman, is on her way to Benson Creek as a mail order bride. She’s tired of everyone treating her defective when they find she is deaf. Ms. Morgan created a character in Sally that is a hard worker, pretty, a good cook and home provider.

This Is A Must Read Book.

All I can say is wow! This was an emotional roller-coaster ride. For me it was a story of guilt, giving up, disillusionment, unhappiness, and settling for second best or maybe even fifth or sixth best.

But the real story beneath all the emotion, is it is never too late to begin again.  The author, Jo Barney, is talented and it shows in this book.

Edith is in her sixties, she was born in the time period that demanded marriage if one committed the unpardonable and became pregnant; their lives became a study of settling, making do, just existing,

DIY Bleach

I finally got the photo from computer-land.  It only took 24 hr for computer-land to spit it out.

Today we are going to make our bleach.  That’s right, you can make your own for a lot less than the stuff you buy in town and this recipe will not make you cough and hack.

It is an easy, quick recipe and works great.  I found this on the internet several years ago.  I can’t remember the site.  If anyone knows, please let me know I will give them credit. By the way, there are hundreds of recipes for bleach on the internet, this is the one I use.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • 3 cups 3 % hydrogen peroxide (the big box store has it cheap)
  • 3 cups water
  • 3 Tablespoons citric acid.  (I use food grade because that is what I have on hand)

Mix all together, place in a DARK BOTTLE (MUST BE DARK), as hydrogen peroxide loses its strength when exposed to light. Use as you would bleach. Just as you would with manufactured Clorox, Do Not mix anything with product( such as ammonia),  I don’t know what chemical reaction it would produce.

Yes, it will bleach out color in color clothes. I have spots on a pair of jeans.

Pioneer Brides-Mail Order Bride by Indiana Wake and Belle Fiffer

Romance in the West!  Strong Sexy Cowboys, Need I say more?

This is a four box set of western romances about strong men and even stronger women that settled the west.

The women came to find the love of a lifetime. Each is a short novella that is very enjoyable. I love Ms. Wake’s and Fiffer’s writing style.

The Rival Bride Book 1

This is the first story in this four box set. Kristine is a young woman with a gambling father that has practically sold her to Robert Miller, a rancher and widower still in love with his dead wife, as a bride.

In exchange he will pay her fathers debts and enable her 2 sisters, Courtney and Patricia, to stay in finishing school. This novella is full of sorrow, jealousy, insecurity, sadness, and finally joy in the morning.

Ms. Wake and Fiffer filled this story with emotion and she added an adversary, Abby, for Robert’s affections. Though short this story was very enjoyable as we watch Kristine grow and Robert find he has a jewel in Kristine; they find their happy ever after.

Had the story been longer Ms. Wake and Fiffer could have fleshed out the story of the rivalry for Robert’s affections; this was still a short enjoyable read.

Letters of Love Book 2

Courtney, Kristine’s seventeen-year-old sister, is the star of this story. Court is in love for the first of her life; Curly, Abby’s ranch hand, has been writing love letters to her. She and

Author Susan Leigh Carlton has written another winner series; this is book 3 of the widow series. From the Alone and Expectingopening prologue that described the infamous battle of Gettysburg where we as a country lost so many of our fine young men on both side to the last page I was hooked.  I cried over all those lost lives and the lives that would be changed forever forward from this awful war; men, women, child forever changed some for good, some for worse in desperate times.

Gone But Knot Forgotten by Mary Marks

Book Review

Author Mary Marks, has Martha Rose and her two best friends back in the thick of things again. This is the first of her books I have had the pleasure of reading; I found it delightful as only cozy mysteries can entertain.
gone but knot forgottenMartha is Jewish, her two friends, Lucy and Birdie, are not; this does not stop the intrepid trio from being fast and loyal friends, who respect each other, quilt together, and get in scrapes together. I loved the fact that Ms. Marks explained a lot of the Jewish traditions especially in regard to the Sabbath and funerals. This added to the book and I loved the information she included, it was educational and interesting as well as adding to the depth of the story.
In this book, Ms. Marks has Martha named as the executor of her old high school friend, Harriet Oliver’s estate. Martha hasn’t been in touch with Harriet for years. Harriet’s estate is worth millions and something seems fishy to Martha about the scene of her death. She was not found for 10 months after she died; it seems that Harriet led a sad and solitary life, her son drowned at five, her husband disappeared, he was eventually declared dead, and she had few friends. To make things even more interesting, Birdie is a walking talking CSI expert from watching television; she is up on all the latest “speak” in regard to criminal investigation.

What follows are plot twists and turns, mysteries, murders, an entire list of suspects, antiques, a priceless quilt and other extremely valuable items are missing, greedy family

A Texas Christmas by by Cecil, Dooley, Franklin, Griffin, Hake, Y’Barbo

Book Review

The book has 6 of the sweetest, wonderful, and clean, in some cases hilarious, romances I have ever read.

The first book Here Cooks the Bride by Cathy Marie Hake takes place in 1879; a hilarious romance between a young woman Lacey, and the local blacksmith Jeff, in Cut Corners, a small town in Texas. She came to a texas christmastown to help her sick aunt, who is a miserable cook, with her diner. Between every swain in town wanting to marry her for her cooking, the 4 old men, retired Texas Rangers,  that founded the town plotting to keep her in town to cook at the diner, and Jeff teaching her to make real Texas chili I laughed and laughed. This was a treat to read.  Watching Jeff and Lacey fall in love was a joy. This was a clean Christian read with strong Christian values.

The 2nd book A Christmas Chronicle by Pamela Griffin takes place in Cut Corners, Texas again in 1881. The four Meddin’ Old Men are at it again, this time trying to marry off Stone’s nephew Travis to Vivian who is clumsy and awkward.  Travis

Inside Look At Death

Good Mourning Is A Gem:  witty,  clever, humorous

Powerful!

When I opened this book I was not sure what I would find inside.  Was I going to cry for the next few days or was just sadness waiting in the pages?

I was wonderfully surprised at the content; witty, clever, humorous, yes, sad at times, eye-opening, irreverent, and tongue in check with quite a different formula for funerals that I found I quite liked.

In the Southern Bible Belt a funeral is almost a religious experience; Ms. Meyers ideas of the send off were so different from we have, I found myself saying, yes, why not!  What a wonderful idea to have all the things that person loved and valued placed at the funeral. I found this a wonderful idea.

The portrayals of the ultra rich as pampered, spoiled, selfish, royalty were educational as I did not realize the rich expected so much to be done for and given to them as a course of life, a product of their privileges. As Ms. Meyers says in this book, death is the one thing that unites all of us, rich or poor.

I enjoyed this book from the first paragraph to last sentence as Ms. Meyers and Ms Moscatello entertained and kept my interest as they documented Ms. Meyers travels from an ultra rich privileged spoiled party planning young woman grieving for her

I read as many reviews of the first two books as I could, to have a sense of the issues and back story in the books. I still felt I was missing something as I started this book, however I was soon caught up in this story.

It can be read as a stand-alone book.  I did feel I would have understood the circumstances a little better had I read the first book, which I plan to do. It did not take away from my enjoyment of the book.

Dylan’s Faith by T. K. Chapin

Dylan's Faith

Do you Like Strong Men?

Do Like Men Overcoming Up bringing?

A Novel of Faith And Love

This is the first book by Mr. Chapin I have read; I can assure you it is not my last. What a wonderful story.

Dylan is reviewing his life as he sits on his porch, thinking of the love of his life, and his family;  what a story it is. No, he is not famous, he is not in society, he is not a leader of the country, he’s not important at all; he is just a God-fearing, God-loving country boy, a Christian man who was far from perfect as all of us are.

I found the analogy of the flaws in his woodcraft so like our lives as Christian’s; imperfect like his wood yet still beautiful, living in the love of God and his forgiveness. I thought Mr. Chapin’s portrayal of Dylan’s life so realistic, Christian but still doing things God would not love, still sinning, still flawed, but assured of God’s love and even though God does not love the sin, he still loves the sinner.

Mr. Chapin shows so aptly that we are still sinners; the difference, we as Christians are forgiven. Dylan walks the walk as well as talks the talk, yet he is far from perfect. You could feel Dylan’s faith

Recipe for DIY Grass and Weed Killer(really anything it is sprayed on)

Actually this will kill anything you spray it on, so be CAREFUL not to let the spray hit something you do not want to kill.

You will need:

sprayer

1 gal of white vinegar

2 cups of Epson Salt

1/4 cup of Dawn Blue Original Dish Soap

I heat the vinegar in the microwave, then pour in the epson salt and stir until melted.  The original recipe did not say to do this, but I found the epson salt plugged up my sprayer if I didn’t melt the salt. It is a little hard to dissolve, get the vinegar hot and it melts well.  Pour vinegar salt mixture into sprayer, lastly pour in dish soap to keep the bubbles down.

I have found this is a good alternate to roundup and so much cheaper.  You can find the epson salt on amazon cheaper than buying the small boxes/bags in town, the vinegar is really inexpensive at Sams Club.  I buy 4-6 two packs at a time we use so much vinegar at our house.

I don’t know where this recipe came from originally, but if anyone knows the original site, please let me know and I will give credit to the original poster.  I think everyone desires credit for their work and will be glad to do so.  The photo is from the University of California.

The President’s Shadow by Brad Meltzer

MysteriesThe President's Shadows abound in this novel.

Brad Meltzer is a very talented author; he has done it again in the latest offering for our delight.  The Culpepper Ring is back in action, hints, clues and mysteries are left all along the story.

Tot is hospitalized and in a coma, Beecher is consumed with mysteries of his father’s death, his old military unit and the White House, buried arms clutching something in the fist found in the Rose Garden of all places, and who was the insider that helped the culprit, a friends betrayal, Nico a psychotic killer and assassin has escaped the mental institution, Nico’s cancer ridden daughter Clementine, what’s she after?

The Knights of the Golden Circle what are they and why are they orchestrating events behind the scene and what is the final result they want?  Does the President really want Beecher to investigate and solve the mysteries; conspiracies abound. Beecher and the President are not friends and not quite the ultimate enemies; they could be described as frenemies; barely civil on the outside, killing enemies on the inside.

The President has sworn to destroy the Culpepper Ring along with Beecher; Beecher knows the President’s long buried secret that can destroy him. George Washington created the Culpepper Ring to

How Would You Like To Be: Bayou Bound by Linda Joyce

Bayou Bound

Family Dynamics

Feuds, Secrets, Manipulation

Love

Bayou Bound has it all!

Nicholas Trehan and Biloxi Dutrey’s families have a long-standing feud, and in the South feuds are righteous to the old guard.   The feud will have great impact on Nick and Biloxi’s relationship.

I understood that author, Linda Joyce, knew the south when I read the sentence, “a come-to-Jesus meeting”, for only in the south can that statement have such monumental meaning.

This is a story about families; family dynamics, family secrets, family history, family manipulation, family love, families that stand against all odds, and the love of two people who can bind those two families back together.

Ms. Joyce has a knack for hitting southern families dynamics right on the head of the nail.  She definitely understands long-standing feuds and the damage they can do.   She also understands that times change,

What A Hoot!

You Will Love This Novel

I Laughed And Laughed Through This Book!

Story Line:

Aunt Rose’s house in Apple Valley Washington is a hideaway for Apricot Miller.  Apricot is running from a groom that didn’t know what fidelity meant; well maybe not running, when her old truck, King Henry III,  gave up the ghost and died on the side of the road, Apricot pulled her 1940 Schwinn out of the trailer attached to old Henry and pedaled off in her pink wedding gown.

Don’t you just the name for her truck!  What a beginning to this novel.  I could see her wedding gown and all peddling for all she was worth.

So, Apricot was pedaling her way to Apple Valley Washington, which is just the beginning of Apricot’s adventure in Apple Valley Washington. She peddles into an almost arrest for B&E at Aunt Roses empty house, meet her cantankerous neighbor and that handsome Deputy Simon Baylor.

Characters, Plotting And Development:

The cast of characters in Apple Valley never ends, gossips runs rampant, some are just odd, some eccentric, and some just plain crazy, oh the life of a small town.  Author Shirlee McCoy betrayed small town life so well with all its quirks.

Apricot is not what she seems, rather than being a fruit cake in a dingy pink wedding dress, she is a millionaire owner of an herbal company;  Apricot childhood was very unconventional; she was reared by hippies and an Aunt that was an original DIY herbalist.

She craves consistency, peace, quiet, and structure. Something she never had as child.  Guess what, she doesn’t get it in nosy, gossipy, interfering Apple Valley either.  This story was a riot!

Nine Buck’s Row by Jennifer Wilde writing as T. E. Huff

Nine Buck row

Jack The Ripper

Victorian London’s East Side

Evil, Mystery, Adventure, and Love

Author Jennifer Wilde has created this story in London’s east side which in the reign of Queen Victoria was a hell hole, during the day it was relatively safe.  At night evil reigned supreme, from young bucks looking for fun to the new evil of the murderer called the Ripper.

The Ripper kills silently, efficiently and very brutally.  Ms. Wilde’s descriptions of the east side were so vivid I could see each street and the activities taking place; I could see the trash and offal, I could almost smell the odors.

The heroine of the story is Susannah; she lives in the east side with her Aunt Marietta until her Aunt is violently killed.  Susannah moves in with Margaret, a distant cousin of Marietta’s; our hero Nicholas Craig, who is wealthy, sullen, cold, distant, and has a strange occupation of creating statistics lives temporarily with his Aunt Margaret until he completes his book of statistics.

Aunt Margaret also has a strange boarder, Mr. Lord, in her attic.  The stage is set for this murder mystery.  The Ripper is running a muck in London’s East Side and Susannah is trying to solve the mystery of her guardian, Ms. Margaret’s house on Nine Buck Row, and fighting her attraction to Nicholas; attraction which runs both ways.

Franny knows no fear and will not fit into the mold that her family and the ranch foreman Felipe desire.  Felipe has set himself as Franny’s protector, watching over her in secret to keep her from harm of her own obstinate ways.

She wants to work the ranch; to use her abilities, Franny can run the ranch as well as any man.

From the first few page author, Genevieve Turner, created a character in Felipe that has a big problem he would deny if confronted.   He’s attracted to Franny and he knows he can never fit into her life.

He is on the outside looking in, sitting at the table but never sleeping in the big house, always the hired hand never the son.  Ms. Turner gave us a look at class distinction in 1903, but this was overcome by Ms. Turner as the story progressed.  Neither will he admit that he is close to loving Franny.

Book Review

This book is part of a series; it can be read as a stand alone.

Miss Charlotte Marie Chastain, better known as Charlie, is not your ordinary frock wearing, every hair in the gemplace female.  Miss Charlie is just a little odd and a  tomboy of the first order; she does everything she can to not appear weak, dependent or female, wears pants, hunts, and swears like no-bodies business. Charlie has a hidden trauma that has cast shadows over her life and made her what she has become.  Elijah (Eli) Sylvester, better known as Fixit around the fort because he can fix anything is considered slow, dim, a throwaway by most except Charlie. Eli spent his whole life being bullied.  Eli is not slow nor dimwitted, he is actually very smart though shy, and he is Charlies best friend.   Eli has loved Charlie for years; Charlie is clueless.  That is, until she walks in on Eli naked.  Wowzer, that was an eye opener for Charlie, both physically and mentally.  Watching Charlie blooms from an unaware, emotionally stunted, awkward teenager in a 25 yr old body was amazing.  Growing pains are hard in the teenage years, but for a 25 yr old this was especially hard; the trauma Charlie hides has stunted her emotional and

Hello World

How is everyone on this HOT HOT Wednesday?

I am late with this week’s review because the book I was reviewing had editing problems. Soooooo, I gave up, it was too distracting. Good story but pages were in the wrong places and other things.

I have started a new book and hope to have it up before the week ends.

Stay cool, remember to hydrate as much as possible in this heat.

Wear light color clothing (at least thats what my mama always said)

Remember our pets are just as hot as we are, leave them plenty of water and place them in a shaded area if you cannot bring them inside. Check on them frequently and, as always,  have your vets phone number handy in case it is needed.

Justified (Book 2 Mended Hearts Series) by Varina Denman

Justified

Contemporary Christian Novel

Fantastic Novel

Although this is Book 2 of the series, Mended Hearts,  it is a stand alone novel. However, I would suggest you read Jaded first, as it will give you an in-depth look at Trapp, its citizens and the Church in Trapp.

This story will take us back to Trapp, Texas, small town America and it’s still the same gossip laden town it was in Jaded.  To give you some background, Fawn Blaylock is trying to put her life back together.  Alone, pregnant, and almost penniless, she is befriended by Ruthie Turner and Ruthie’s family which includes JohnScott.  JohnScott will become a major part of this book.

Fawn’s daddy, Neil, is the richest man in Trapp and an hypocritical Christian. Fawn had lived the life of

Holding Fire By Scott Hughes Short Stories of Self Destruction

BOOK REVIEW

I will admit I have on more than one occasion skipped the introduction to a book, I want to get to the meat Holding Fireof book, fast. I am glad I did not with this one, I started this book with a thoughtful mind in regards to vengeance, holding on to it and its self-destructive traits.

Running with Guilt by Maggie Stancu was proof of the old adage if you seek revenge, go ahead and dig two graves, one for them and one for you.  Ms. Stancu proved this adage in this story and did so very well.

The victim kills Vic’s sister. Vic wanted revenge for her sister death. Vic found she was not as cold-blooded as she thought, she had a conscience.

Dog Eat Dog by Joy Meenah.  Ms. Meenah certainly proved that vengeance is a two-sided sword. Pam is the supervisor from hell. She demoralized the office. She had a secret agenda.  Pam found she had met her match in the lowly employee, Elaine.  Elaine is much more than she seemed. Ms. Meenah did such a

Book Review

Contemporary Romance

After a very trying surgery Dan Newman, surgeon, literally bowled over Gayla Levin in the hospital hallway. Rescuing an Angel All Gayla wanted to do was deliver an envelope to her estranged domineering father Dr. Eli Levine; she is not happy to find herself laying on the floor.

Dan was immediately attracted to Gayle.  Gayle thinks all doctors have a “God complex” but still the attraction hits her.

Dan has a physical handicap, so much so, Dr Levine tried to persuade him not to become a surgeon.  Gayle’s handicap is not physical but emotional and mental.  Dan has overcome his handicap but just as in life, Dan is thrown a curse ball to overcome.

Gayle picked herself up out of the bottle and  pills to try to redeem her life, to make a difference in others lives, Dan can give the support she needs.  Mrs. Jacobs portrayed the sexual tension, frustration, and family discord very well.

The attraction between Dan and Gayle was fire hot. Their thoughts about each both could melt cold steel.  The love scenes burn up the pages.

Book Review

Ethan Barstow and  Kate Kinsella are looking for the same man, Ethan’s brother Charley, in this action into the land of shadowspacked western romance authored by Kristy McCaffrey.  They are under several misconceptions.

Kate’s looking for Charley Barstow to return him to his pregnant fiancé, Agnes. Kate mistakenly thinks Ethan is a killer and outlaw per Charley’s drunken ramblings. Ethan is looking for his brother Charley to mend fences and make peace. From conversations in town, Ethan thinks Kate is Charley’s fiancé.

They decide to continue the hunt together after an action packed rescue of Kate by Ethan.  This story features two very strong people who believe the worse of each other, but know in their hearts it can’t be true.

Author Kristy McCaffrey gives us raging river crossings, outlaws as Kate stated “the most inept outlaws ever”, mysterious appearances of  Joe the Indian,  a wolf called Bart is there when needed, attacks by Indian children, good and evil spirits, and attraction between two main characters that grows day by day until there is nothing to do but give in.

Kristy McCaffrey kept the story moving with a good plot, and sub-characters and lots of action.  The story has more than a touch of the paranormal that was very enjoyable and added flavor to the plot, as well as the mystery.  I

Hello Everyone

I started a new book today.  Due to doctors appointments the next several days, I can’t post my review as quickly. I will post as soon as possible.

Nascar race was good yesterday.  My boy, Junior did not do very well, but, hey, that’s ok he’s still my man.  Just one time I would love for the radio announcers to call the televised race. I love how excited the radio broadcasters get calling the race, can you imagine seeing what they call! No, I can’t put the radio on the tv, it’s too big and it would drive me crazy to hear the race from one part of the room and see it in another.

I need to make more shampoo and hair conditioner, I will post those recipes soon. I also make a good hair spray, very simple and works great for pennies rather than dollars. I will so post a few sites for lots of DIY recipes.

It is time to make my DIY weed killer, works great, I will also post that soon. Only thing I have found it will not kill is poison oak and sumac.  Boy, poison oak and sumac are tough.

Will post again soon

Book Review

This story begins in London and Devon in 1845. Gwen is employed by Lord Beecham in the London law Silk and Scars by Cassandra Deanfirm that handles legal matter for the Edward, Duke of Sowrith. She mistakenly mixes a personal letter in with correspondence to Edward.

Gwen reveals her fear for the health and well- being of her parents and how she longs for home.

Author Cassandra Deans descriptions were so vivid I could easily see the scene described; whether it was the tors and moors described by Edward or setting the scene of reading Gwen’s and Edward’s letters.

Edward demands Lord Beecham and his scribe Gwen come to Devon immediately, after Gwen wrote of an incident occurring at the firm. Edward and Gwen would finally

David’s idea of caring for his grandmother is writing to her not providing his companionship.
David is rather dense when it comes to women and their emotions or how to deal with either. Unconquerable Callie by DeAnn Smallwood

Book Review

This is a wonderful western with Callie as the heroine. Her spinster Aunt Bertha, who late in life has Unconquerable Callierecently married, raised Callie. The new husband has a nephew, who needs a wife. Aunt Bertha thinks Callie needs a husband.

Callie is a woman out of step with the time; she is smart, stubborn, independent, and determined. She refused to fit the mold of the day, so she runs away to find her dream, a bakery in South Pass Wyoming.

Woven thru this story are the realities of crossing to the west on a wagon train; this is the story of one of those crossings. Only strong men and women survived the trip, Callie is one of those women. Callie grows into a strong woman who has a smart mind that earned the respect of her fellow travelers.

Her opinions were respected and sought out. The way west was harsh, Callie became a woman who met each challenge as well as any man as she faces, raging rivers, heat, unforgiving terrain, disease, and Indians, earning the respect and love of the Seth, the wagon captain.

What a character in Callie, author DeAnn Smallwood created. I chuckled as I read some of Callie’s antics in dealing as a woman in a mans world. I thought I would howl when Seth was oh so

Florida is a world away from the city and Catholic orphanage, but the teaching of Mother Superior was ingrained in Agnes, especially, her advice that preachiness is not Godliness and to not offer advice when it is not sought.
